Choosing for the future

A Sustainable Development Policy for Société du parc Jean-Drapeau

In 2009, Société du parc Jean-Drapeau launched its first sustainable development policy, which reflects a desire by the entire organization to do more and to do it better. With the theme Choosing for the Future, sustainable development at Parc Jean-Drapeau encompasses economic, social and environmental concerns, mindful of meeting the needs of current and future generations, so that cohesive, effective and sustainable decisions can be made.

Sustainable development at Parc Jean-Drapeau also means offsetting greenhouse gas emissions to improve the quality of air and build a healthy, sustainable future for the Park. In addition to its centres of activity, nearly 100 major public events are held on its grounds each year. Société du parc Jean-Drapeau has thus created the Fonds Oxygène to offset the CO2 generated by daily activities and major events. The initiatives financed by this fund will ensure that natural resources are used in a sustainable manner.

2010 marks the start of the materialization of the Choosing for the Future policy by the developing and adopting of the 2010-2012 Sustainable Development Action Plan. Actually, more than 400 actions were chosen to respond to the social, economic and environmental concerns related to Société du parc Jean-Drapeau activities. A summary of this plan is found below.

For the past three years, the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau and the Consortium Écho-Logique have collaborated on the managing of residual matter generated in the public areas of the Parc and during the events that take place there. To support the mission of the Consortium, the Société du parc Jean-Drapeau has made an outdoor site available under the Jacques-Cartier Bridge during the summer season. The partnership strives to foster the economic, social and environmental interests of the two organizations, thereby contributing to Parc Jean-Drapeau's new sustainable development policy.
