Utopie

Created by Jonathan Villeneuve in 2020, Utopie is the art work selected by the City of Montréal's Public art Bureau to promote Calder Alley in Parc Jean-Drapeau's new Espace 67 facility.

The work is comprised of primary yellow linear structures that align with the surrounding architecture and create a contrast with the urban landscape and natural setting of the premises. The work's structure also evokes the geometric design of the nearby Biosphere, thereby ensuring the continuity of the visual experience.

The interactive work lights up at twilight and the lighting of the various elements changes in relation to sensors detecting the presence and movements of visitors, which creates unique and transient scenes.

The work evokes the concept of a futuristic utopia: the vision of a future that is connected and non-hierarchical, where human ingenuity is put to the service of a common ideal built in symbiosis with the environment.
